Deb Haaland Warns of Impending Healthcare Crisis as Trump Threatens 15 Rural New Mexico Hospitals
Haaland calls for protection of rural communities facing potential hospital closures as new report shows New Mexico is set to lose $9.2B in healthcare spending
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Today, Deb Haaland, candidate for New Mexico governor, warned New Mexicans directly about proposed federal legislation that would force the closure of 15 rural hospitals across New Mexico, creating a healthcare catastrophe for the state. The legislation, which Haaland has dubbed the “Big Bad Bill,” is projected to cut over $9.2 billion in critical funding to rural healthcare facilities while providing tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans, according to a new report by the Urban Institute.
“We have a catastrophe waiting to happen,” said Deb Haaland. “If this bill passes, some of our most vulnerable people will have to travel hundreds of miles further to get to a hospital. I mean really, where will mothers go to get proper care for their children? How will elders access competent care?”
New Mexico ranks among the top six states most severely impacted by the proposed cuts, which would force rural hospitals to limit services or close altogether, leaving communities without critical medical care.
“I promise you, as governor, I will fight tooth and nail to make sure everyone in New Mexico has access to healthcare and hold Trump and his cronies accountable for the scams they are pulling on our families,” Haaland went on to say. “They answer to us.”
The video comes as Haaland continues her campaign across New Mexico, where she has recently secured key endorsements, including from former Former County Commissioner Larry Sanchez, Taos Community Organizer Billy Knight, former Mora County Commissioner Paula Garcia, former State Auditor Brian Colón, Albuquerque City Councilor Joaquin Baca, Las Cruces City Councilor Becky Corran, former State Senator Siah Correra Hemphill, former Valencia County Democratic Party Chair Pam Cordova, and the national veterans organization Common Defense. These are in addition to the scores of endorsements she had already garnered.
