Deb Haaland Warns New Mexicans About “Big Billionaire Bill” as Trump and Republicans Push Horrific Legislation

Haaland highlights devastating cuts to SNAP, Medicaid, and rural hospitals while Trump’s rich friends receive tax breaks

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Today, Deb Haaland, candidate for New Mexico governor, released a video warning New Mexicans about the “Big Billionaire Bill” being pushed by President Trump and Congressional Republicans, which would devastate working families across the state while providing massive tax giveaways to the wealthy. The bill passed the U.S. Senate and is currently being considered in the U.S. House of Representatives.

“This sends a chilling message to all of us: Trump and Republicans in Congress care more about donors and billionaires than working people—people like us,” said Haaland. “Right now, we have a serious fight in front of us.”

The legislation would impose severe cuts to critical programs that New Mexicans depend on. More than 200,000 New Mexicans who are already struggling would lose access to SNAP benefits under the proposed cuts, which are even steeper than previous versions of the bill. The bill also makes devastating cuts to Medicaid, which nearly half of all New Mexicans rely on for healthcare. Up to 8 rural hospitals would be under threat of closing, while New Mexicans would face higher healthcare premiums, longer wait times, and increased costs pushed to providers, hospitals, and patients.

Haaland went on to say, “As governor, my priority will put New Mexico first, and if anyone comes after our families, I’ll be right there to hold the line and fight for our state.”

Haaland also asked New Mexicans to call the offices of Representatives Melanie Stansbury, Teresa Leger Fernandez and Gabe Vasquez to thank them for their strong opposition to the dangerous bill.
