In the News: Deb Haaland’s Focus on Lowering Costs, Building Prosperity Resonates Across New Mexico

Albuquerque, NM – In case you missed it, Deb Haaland, former Secretary of the Interior and candidate for New Mexico governor, wrapped up her “Lift Up New Mexico Tour,” a 15 stop journey where she heard from voters in rural communities all across the state and shared her vision to make life more affordable in New Mexico. This follows Haaland’s 19-stop launch tour, where she met thousands of New Mexicans in their hometowns and listened to their hopes and ideas for the state’s future. Haaland has now campaigned in all 33 counties in New Mexico in the first six months of her campaign.

Across the state, Haaland heard from voters and affordability topped their lists of concerns as families continue to feel the impact of cuts to key support systems by the Trump administration. Earlier this year, Haaland previewed her economic agenda for New Mexico and laid out a path to support small, local businesses and spur new economic opportunities for New Mexicans.

Haaland, citing the state’s low ranking for education, proposed higher pay for educators and staff.

“When we are asking doctors to come to our state to serve. … They want to bring their families to a place that’s safe,” she said. “Likewise, doctors want to bring their families to a place where our education is very strong.”

New Mexico Political Report: Haaland warns of rural healthcare crisis, opposes federal healthcare legislation

According to Haaland, nearly 40% of New Mexico’s population relies on Medicaid—the highest proportion in the country. She warned that changes to healthcare funding would lead to higher premiums for New Mexicans with Medicare and private insurance coverage.

“There’s a crisis on the horizon – many rural hospitals across the state are at risk of closing,” Haaland said. “I grew up in a rural community. I know how devastating this bill will be for the thousands of New Mexicans who will lose their healthcare, and spoiler alert: it’s not just about health care. It’s about the economy at large. As Governor I will do everything in my power to stop it.”

“Let’s be clear: this bill isn’t just bad for New Mexicans on the margins, it will mean all of us have to pay more for our healthcare—all so out-of-state billionaires could get an even bigger tax cut,” Haaland said.

Haaland announced a roadmap to weather what she called “the devastating storm that Trump and his wealthy friends are brewing.” Her plan includes using New Mexico’s budget surplus to prioritize ensuring that people avoid losing health care coverage, with significant new appropriations to New Mexico’s Health Care Affordability Fund. She also proposed hiring more guides to help people navigate insurance enrollment through BeWell NM, plus added services to help New Mexicans facing additional, intentional bureaucratic burdens imposed by Trump’s new law.

Haaland’s campaign continues to build momentum statewide, with endorsements from healthcare professionals, rural community leaders, and working families across all 33 counties of New Mexico.
