Deb Haaland Earns Planned Parenthood Votes New Mexico Endorsement For Governor
Planned Parenthood backs Haaland as the clear choice to protect New Mexicans’ access to critical reproductive healthcare
Albuquerque, N.M. – Today, Planned Parenthood Votes New Mexico (PPVNM) announced their support for Deb Haaland’s campaign for governor of New Mexico. Haaland has firsthand experience with the importance of accessible and affordable reproductive healthcare, having relied on Medicaid and Planned Parenthood for care during college and through her pregnancy.
As Donald Trump and Republicans continue to undermine reproductive healthcare and drive up costs, Haaland understands the critical role Planned Parenthood plays in providing affordable healthcare to New Mexicans. As governor, Haaland vows to step in to offset any loss of federal funding, protecting providers’ ability to deliver the lifesaving services our communities rely on.
“Planned Parenthood Votes New Mexico is proud to endorse Secretary Deb Haaland for governor. Her steadfast commitment to reproductive and sexual health care access is backed by a decades-long track record of support for Planned Parenthood, our patients, and the communities we serve. She understands that true freedom means having the power to make decisions about our bodies and our lives with dignity and care,” said Adrienne Mansanares, President and CEO of Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains Action Fund. “As a former patient, a U.S. Congresswoman, and the first Indigenous person appointed to a Cabinet-level position, Secretary Haaland holds a deep understanding of both the diverse needs of our patients and the compassion and heart our providers bring to their care. At a time when federal attacks on health care are escalating, Secretary Haaland is the trusted leader New Mexico needs to safeguard our future.”
In Congress, Haaland championed reproductive health and rights. To address rising maternal mortality rates, she co-sponsored the MOMS Act to provide investment in programs to ensure high-quality maternal health services for women, newborns, and families. She also co-sponsored the Woman’s Health Protection Act of 2019 to establish a statutory right to provide and receive abortion care. A Native American herself, Haaland has worked to advocate for maternal health in her community.
“When I was younger, I would not have received the care that I needed if it were not for Planned Parenthood. The providers at Planned Parenthood were with me every step of the way and I will fight fiercely to protect the work they do,” said Deb Haaland. “I won’t stand by and let Trump and Republicans take healthcare away from New Mexicans. I’m running for governor to protect New Mexico’s health and partner with organizations in our community that are providing affordable options.”
Throughout her campaign, Haaland has traveled the state to meet directly with healthcare providers, patients, and hospital staff, listening to their concerns and confronting New Mexico’s toughest challenges head-on. At a press conference, Haaland outlined her plan to defend rural hospitals and health centers facing devastating cuts, and to protect healthcare coverage for more than 88,000 New Mexicans as Trump’s “Big Bad Bill” could cut over $9.2 billion in health care spending in New Mexico.
PPVNM’s endorsement adds to the growing momentum behind Haaland’s campaign as she continues to build a coalition focused on delivering results for working people across the state.
