With Local Elections Nearing, Deb Haaland Urges Residents to Vote YES on Public School Bonds

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – As local elections near, Deb Haaland, candidate for governor, urged residents to vote YES on school bonds for public schools across the state. School districts, including AlbuquerqueLas Cruces and Sante Fe, have reported dilapidated buildings, hot classrooms during the school day, and leaky roofs that make it difficult for students to focus. Local election ballots include bonds to direct funding to school infrastructure projects.

“I urge voters across New Mexico to vote yes on the school bonds included on their ballots. If we want our students to succeed and be engaged, we must make sure our schools have basic infrastructure like air conditioning so they can focus on learning. As your next Governor, I’m looking forward to working with teachers, families, and students so our kids get better results and are prepared for any job they want,” said Haaland.

If approved, the bond for schools in Albuquerque will enable Albuquerque Public Schools to fund new and updated classrooms, a special needs education facility, a training center for career technical education, and updated HVAC systems. In Las Cruces, voters have the option to approve bonds that will renovate kitchen facilities, improve trade shops, fix roofs and other basic infrastructure projects that would otherwise lack funding. Bonds across the state will help schools complete similar projects that will create the environments for children to focus on learning.

Haaland knows that New Mexico ranks nationally in the bottom for education and believes that every New Mexican student needs access to a quality public education for a better future. A proud product of public schools, as governor, Haaland will fight tirelessly for our kids so they are prepared for their future, improve test scores, and find a good paying job in New Mexico.

Haaland recently wrote an op-ed in the Albuquerque Journal about her plan to prepare students for life beyond the classroom.

Haaland has the support of educators and education leaders including Yanira Gurrola, Andres Romero, Charlotte Little, Bill Soules, and Eleanor Chavez.
