Deb Haaland Earns Endorsement From End Citizens United

ALBUQUERQUE, NM – Today, End Citizens United (ECU) announced their support for Deb Haaland in the New Mexico gubernatorial election. ECU works to get special interest money out of politics.

The endorsement comes as a testament to Haaland’s grassroots campaign supported by New Mexicans in every county. The average grassroots donation to the campaign is $23.21, and Haaland’s base includes over 110,000 individual donors and over 254,000 donations.

“As big corporations and billionaires are buying their way into politics and rigging the system against working people, Deb understands what it’s like to struggle to make ends meet and wants the system to work for everyday New Mexicans,” said ECU President Tiffany Muller. “Deb has made grassroots support central to her campaign for governor because she wants to hear directly from voters across the state. No one is buying their way into Deb’s values and ECU is proud to support her.”

As Governor, Haaland is committed to keeping special interest groups from funding New Mexico politics. She will:

  • Crack down on special interests in Santa Fe and support efforts for increased transparency for lobbyists.
  • Close dark money loop-holes in state laws to make our elections more transparent.
  • Attack corruption at the Roundhouse by supporting structural reforms, including paying legislators a full-time salary to expand the candidate pool, increase session length to strengthen the legislature, and back stronger staffing structures for legislators to cut down on lobbyist influence.

In Congress, Haaland co-sponsored the For the People Act, which would reduce the influence of big money in our politics and strengthen transparency with new ethics rules. The legislation also pushed for public financing and the protection and expansion of voting rights.

“Our democracy works best when every voice is heard and not just those with the biggest bank accounts. Grassroots campaigns support working class candidates, who aren’t in the pocket of special interests. I’m committed to standing up to corporate CEOs, billionaires, and special interests and fighting for New Mexicans first,” said Haaland
