Deb Haaland Puts Books in Kids’ Hands, Delivering Over 350 Books to New Mexico Students

ALBUQUERQUE, NM – Deb Haaland delivered more than 350 children’s books to Read To Me! – ABQ Network, a region-wide non-profit focused on promoting childhood literacy.
As a single mom, Deb Haaland cleaned her child’s pre-school in order to reduce the bill. Haaland credits early childhood education and reading at home with her child’s ability to read by kindergarten and succeed in school and beyond. As governor, Haaland will ensure New Mexico’s kids are taught to read earlier, inspired to learn, and presented with opportunities to stay in New Mexico when they’re grown.
“When my child learned to read, I saw their eyes light up, and their world opened – I want that for every New Mexico child. I’m grateful to everyone who donated books to my book drive, so that we could deliver more than 350 books to help our kids read. As governor, I want every child to learn to read earlier and every family to have the tools to help our kids have a bright future,” said Haaland.
Haaland knows that New Mexico faces serious challenges for literacy, and believes every New Mexican student needs access to a quality public education for a better future. A proud product of public schools, as governor, Haaland will fight tirelessly for our kids so they are prepared for their future, improve test scores, and find a good paying job in New Mexico.
Haaland recently wrote an op-ed in the Albuquerque Journal about her plan to prepare students for life beyond the classroom. She has the support of educators and education leaders including Yanira Gurrola, Andres Romero, Charlotte Little, Bill Soules, and Eleanor Chavez.
