Haaland Speaks Directly to Voters on Trump, GOP Cuts to Clean Energy Jobs & Electricity Savings for NM Families
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – As President Trump and Republicans in Congress pave the way for more billionaire giveaways at the expense of working families in New Mexico, Deb Haaland, candidate for New Mexico governor, spoke directly to voters about the harm it would cause to New Mexico’s economy. Haaland’s video went up across her social media platforms and zeroed in on the cuts to the burgeoning clean energy economy.
In the video, Haaland states, “When I served as Interior Secretary, one of the key things I focused on was creating jobs in clean energy and lowering energy costs in New Mexico – harnessing the wind and sun to generate energy and create economic opportunity. These local industries were actually doing that, bringing jobs and generating electricity, and now Trump is trying to stop those efforts. It’ll make electricity more expensive and kill even more New Mexico jobs.”
The radical Republican tax bill includes cuts to the Inflation Reduction Act and proposes gutting investments that create jobs, lower energy costs, and support New Mexico businesses. New Mexico has $9.9 billion in low carbon energy investments pending. Many clean energy projects under construction throughout the state utilized Inflation Reduction Act funds demonstrating the effective strategy to spur innovation and growth in the state – and further underlining the potential harm Trump and Republicans in Congress can cause.
Haaland has a record of investing in new industries that will diversify New Mexico’s economy. As Secretary of the Interior she moved ahead on permitting for New Mexico’s SunZia Transmission project which bolstered union jobs with a project labor agreement between the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) and SunZia’s developer. The union estimated the project would result in 500 construction jobs for members and 150 permanent jobs.
As a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, Haaland celebrated the groundbreaking of La Joya Wind Farm in Torrance County, championed energy efficiency efforts through the National Defense Authorization Act, and led the THRIVE Agenda, which set out to create new good-paying union jobs in a clean energy economy while promoting fairness for communities harmed by legacy pollution and left behind by large corporations.
