Equality NM: Haaland Steadfast Champion for LGBTQ Communities in New Mexico

Albuquerque, N.M. – Today, Equality New Mexico announced their support of Deb Haaland to be the next governor of New Mexico. Their support adds to Haaland’s growing list of endorsements from organizations around the state.

Equality New Mexico works to uplift voices and leadership that will protect the rights and livelihoods of LGBTQ New Mexicans.

“At a time when the LGBTQ community is under attack from a cruel administration, working with organizations like Equality NM is more critical than ever. Every New Mexican deserves dignity and respect, and I’m honored to have EQNM’s endorsement; I will be in the fight for New Mexicans rights and expanding protections right alongside them,” said Haaland.

“We are proud to endorse Deb Haaland for Governor of New Mexico. She has been a reliable and steadfast champion for LGBTQ communities in New Mexico, and we trust her administration will continue that legacy. She’s focused on delivering a bold and necessary agenda to protect and expand vital access to healthcare, make our communities safer, and protect the rights of all New Mexicans in the face of a destructive federal administration. We know that when she’s elected, Queer and Trans New Mexicans will have a meaningful and collaborative relationship with the Governor and her office—a relationship we critically need in times like these,” said Marshall Martinez, Chief Liberation Officer.

In Congress, Haaland served as Chair of the Congressional LGBTQ+ Equality Caucus. Haaland also introduced the “Anthony Gonzales Equality for Survivors (AGES) Act” (H.R.7209) to ensure married LGBTQ+ couples receive the same Social Security benefits as all couples. As Secretary of the Interior Department, Haaland designated Stone Wall National Monument and bolstered support for LGBTQ+ employees at the department, including overturning restrictions on National Park Service wearing their uniforms at Pride events.

Throughout her campaign, Haaland has traveled to all 33 counties in New Mexico where she met with New Mexicans in their community. Her plans for affordability, education, public safety, and healthcare can be found at debhaaland.com/debsplan.
