The Future of New Mexico Wants Deb Haaland as their Next Governor

Haaland earns endorsement from Young Dems, UNM College Dems, and NMSU College Dems
Albuquerque, N.M. – Today, Deb Haaland, candidate for governor, received the endorsement of three groups representing the next generation of Democratic leaders across the state: Young Democrats of New Mexico, University of New Mexico College Democrats, and New Mexico State University College Democrats. These student organizations join the Committee of Interns and Residents, Service Employees International Union, in their trust in Deb Haaland to lead New Mexico as governor.

“Across New Mexico, younger generations are excited for leadership focused on addressing the rising cost of living and creating good-paying jobs,” said Young Dems President Marcos Balido. “We’re standing with Deb Haaland because much like our generation, she wants to ensure we have access to education throughout our lives, that we get the pay we work for by doubling down on wage theft, and that college grads can get jobs in New Mexico by expanding apprenticeship and pre-apprenticeship programs.”

“The College Democrats at the University of New Mexico are proud to endorse Deb Haaland for governor. No student should have to choose between paying for textbooks or filling up their gas tank to get to class, however that is the reality many students face today,” UNM College Dems President Breahna Roark. “We need a governor who will take on the affordability crisis and make it easier for students to succeed. We are confident in Deb’s mission and know she is the one for the job.”

“For so many students in New Mexico, higher education is only possible because of programs like the Opportunity and Lottery Scholarships. We need a governor who will protect and build on those investments so students can keep chasing their goals,” said NMSU College Dems President Awlen Salazar. “Haaland understands what it takes to invest in our state’s future leaders, and that’s why the NMSU College Democrats are proud to endorse her for governor.”

This endorsement shows Haaland’s broad support across demographics. If elected she will expand the opportunity scholarship, lower costs by banning rent fixing and connecting local growers to grocers, and fight Trump’s cuts to higher education and research institutions.

These student organizations join nearly 150 endorsements that Haaland has earned from teachers, state employees, conservation groups, and Tribal leaders. Throughout her campaign, Haaland has traveled to all 33 counties in New Mexico, meeting directly with families, workers, and community leaders to hear their concerns and share her vision for a safer, stronger, and healthier state. As Secretary of the Interior Department, Haaland managed over 70,000 employees and an $18 billion dollar annual budget.
