Haaland to Increase Child Tax Credit, Working Families Tax Credit as Governor
Albuquerque, N.M. – Deb Haaland, the Democratic nominee for governor in New Mexico, proposed bold solutions to put more money in people’s pockets. As a single mom trying to make ends meet, tax credits were a critical lifeline.
Haaland believes that working people should be able to hold onto more of their paychecks, while requiring the wealthy and big corporations to pay their fair share. To address this need, Haaland plans to increase the Child Tax Credit and the Working Families Tax Credit.
The costs associated with raising children are among the biggest expenses that New Mexicans face, and they are only increasing. The Child Tax Credit varies by income level, with the largest credits available to low-income families. Haaland’s plan will increase the amount of the child tax credit and expand eligibility to support families.
By increasing New Mexico’s Working Families Tax Credit for low and moderate-income families, Haaland’s plan will put more money back into the pockets of working people. This will help New Mexicans to keep up with rising costs while also expanding eligibility. The New Mexico Working Families Tax Credit is based on the federal Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), and is considered one of the most effective anti-poverty programs of the federal government.
“My priority is driving down costs and putting more money in New Mexican’s pockets,” said Haaland. “If I’m elected, I will prioritize lowering costs by building more affordable housing and cracking down on predatory rental practices, increasing middle-class tax breaks like the working families tax credit and the child tax credit, and healthcare reform that makes it easier and cheaper to see a doctor.”
As a working mom who lived paycheck to paycheck, Haaland understands the challenges New Mexicans face. Haaland plans to lower essential costs of housing, energy, groceries, while giving New Mexicans a raise. Haaland’s affordability agenda has broad support from New Mexico leaders, local business owners, and families.
