Haaland Celebrates America 250, Vows to Protect Vital Programs that Support New Mexicans

Albuquerque, N.M. – Today, Deb Haaland, the Democratic nominee for governor in New Mexico celebrates America’s 250th anniversary and vowed to protect vital programs that support New Mexicans after a year of the “Big Beautiful Bill.” 

The “Big Beautiful Bill” led to the biggest rollback of federal programs and put rural hospitals in danger, while providing tax cuts for the ultra wealthy. New Mexico was deeply impacted by cuts to SNAP benefits and it took state legislative support to supplement millions of dollars so New Mexicans didn’t go hungry. 

While millions of New Mexicans struggle to put food on the table, buy groceries, and put gas in their tank, the “Big Beautiful Bill” has only benefited America’s wealthiest.

“I am proud to celebrate 250 years of our country. As a Pueblo woman, I have a deep connection to our land that goes back farther than our nation’s founding. As the daughter of two military veterans, I will always believe that service is one of the greatest ways to give back to our country. At the same time, it’s important to reflect on how the most powerful country in the world is treating its people,” said Haaland. “Donald Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill is making people sicker, poorer, and hungrier and governors are the first line of defense against these disastrous cuts. I will stand up to anyone who threatens the livelihood of New Mexicans and I will work to lower costs, create safer communities, ensure kids can read sooner, and provide access to quality healthcare.”

Throughout her campaign, Haaland has traveled to all 33 counties in New Mexico, meeting directly with families, workers, and community leaders to hear their concerns and share her vision for a safer, stronger, and healthier state. In Congress, Haaland was the most bipartisan member of her class with the passage of multiple bills, later signed into law by Trump.
