NewsNation: Deb Haaland Projected to Win Gubernatorial Race in New Mexico
On NewsNation this week, Deb Haaland, the Democratic nominee for governor in New Mexico, talked about her plan to stand up to Donald Trump and put more money back into the pockets of New Mexicans.
New Mexico is uniquely vulnerable to federal government cuts due to the number of people who receive Medicaid and SNAP benefits, and without the right leaders fighting back, would feel the brunt of the attacks from Washington.
Haaland touted her experience and leadership as critical to standing up to Trump. In Congress, Haaland repeatedly voted to block cuts to Medicaid, and championed efforts to ensure more families had access to healthcare during the COVID-19 pandemic and that doctors, nurses, and first responders had the support they needed to provide critical care during the crisis.
“Here in New Mexico the Trump policies are making New Mexicans sicker, poorer, and hungrier. He’s cutting Medicaid; he’s slashing SNAP benefits; we have had a difficult time as tariffs are causing prices to go up; the illegal war in Iran [has] caused gas prices to go up,” said Haaland. “We’re largely rural communities here in New Mexico. If you live in a town 30 miles or 50 miles away from your job and you’re having to drive every day, the cost of gas really adds up. Some people going into debt because of that. They’re tired of Donald Trump raising prices on them, they want some accountability. And I’d like to be Governor so I can help put more money in the pockets of New Mexicans.”
Throughout her campaign, Haaland has traveled to all 33 counties in New Mexico, meeting directly with families, workers, and community leaders to hear their concerns and share her vision for a safer, stronger, and healthier state.
