Deb Haaland Tours Emergency Homeless Shelter, Shares Vision to Address New Mexico’s Housing Crisis

Yesterday, Deb Haaland, the Democratic nominee for Governor, toured Consuelo’s Place, an Emergency Homeless Shelter. The shelter serves vulnerable individuals and families who are transitioning into permanent housing and provides life-stabilizing services.

Consuelo’s Place provides wraparound case management to clients experiencing homelessness, substance use disorders, and poverty. They house an average of 75-90 clients of all ages, including people with disabilities, families with children, those experiencing domestic violence, sexual trauma, and human trafficking, along with veterans and the LGBTQI+ population.  

“Consuelo’s Place is providing life-changing services to New Mexicans facing housing insecurity and homelessness. New Mexicans deserve a safe place to live and the support to get there,” said Haaland. “I know what it’s like to not be able to make ends meet, and during that time, being able to expect any amount of stability made a big difference. As Governor, partnering with organizations like Consuelo’s Place will be critical. We will only be able to tackle housing insecurity if we do the outreach and prioritize permanent housing while investing in behavioral health services, prevention, and treatment. That’s why lowering costs, putting money in New Mexicans’ pockets, and helping get people into needed housing are top priorities for me.”

Haaland’s plan includes cutting red tape to reduce the cost of construction and build housing more efficiently, investing in behavioral health and crisis response services, and creating an affordability navigator that helps people access and understand the resources that they have available to them. In Congress, Haaland stood up for the rights of military families to have safe housing and tenant rights.
