Former State Engineer Touts Haaland’s Record on Water in Latest Ad

“Whatever we need, Deb always comes through.”

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Today, Democratic nominee for Governor Deb Haaland released a new ad that focuses on an issue front of mind as New Mexicans recently experienced whiplash between historic drought followed by massive flooding.

In Haaland’s latest ad “Water,” former New Mexico State Engineer Mike Hamman shares his experience working as a public servant to preserve the state’s water. Hamman touts the millions of dollars in investments that Haaland delivered to New Mexico as Secretary of the Interior Department.

The ad highlights Haaland’s commitment to protecting New Mexico’s water with a data center moratorium on new large-scale projects until clear guardrails are established.

“Our state is experiencing a severe water shortage and Deb’s priority is to continue the work she’s done throughout her career and protect our water,” said Haaland’s Campaign Manager, Dylan McArthur. “She demands that we improve our water infrastructure, and for any new industries coming to our state to be sustainable. Deb is the only candidate in this race to call for a day one moratorium on data centers and a plan to preserve our water. She understands what water means for New Mexicans and she won’t let any industry take advantage of our natural resources.”

As Secretary of the U.S. Department of the Interior, Haaland strengthened New Mexico’s water security by delivering a $60 million investment for water conservation and drought resilience along the Rio Grande. The initiative addresses a historic 23-year drought impacting the Rio Grande. She also delivered funding to build water infrastructure in eastern New Mexico, and Jicarilla Apache Nation.

Haaland has made water a top policy priority throughout her campaign. For example, at last year’s Next Generation Water Summit, she proposed steps to modernize groundwater management in overdrawn basins, expand stormwater capture systems statewide, and offer competitive grants to farmers for modern irrigation technology, among other measures.

It means more clean water for our crops, for our families, and it helps relieve the pressure.
