Haaland Meets Farmers, Ranchers, and the Agricultural Industry in Southern New Mexico
Albuquerque, N.M. – Democratic nominee for Governor Deb Haaland met with farmers, growers, and livestock owners in Southern New Mexico as she listened to their concerns and shared her plans to grow our agricultural economy.
Haaland met with New Mexico farmers for a roundtable regarding issues impacting the agriculture industry, including water, diesel prices, and immigration. In a conversation with the New Mexico Farm and Livestock Bureau (NMF&LB), Haaland shared her ideas to build a successful and sustainable future for agriculture in our state. Accompanied by NMF&LB, Haaland toured the New Mexico State University Chile Pepper Institute to learn more about the agriculture programs offered and research conducted at our state’s primary land grant university.
“I am grateful to the farmers I spoke with for sharing their stories, proposing ideas for the future, and for their willingness to work together to build up our vital agriculture traditions and industry and provide for future generations,” said Haaland. “As Governor, I will be committed to ensuring that our farmers and ranchers have the resources they need to thrive and supply New Mexicans with the best chile, beef, food, and crops that are essential to our way of life.”
As Governor, Haaland will work to ensure every New Mexican has access to healthy food. Haaland’s affordability plan aims to lower the cost of groceries and make fresh, healthy food more accessible for New Mexico families, while ensuring producers get paid their fair share. Haaland will defend SNAP and food assistance programs from federal cuts, use state resources to supplement federal programs, and keep families fed. Haaland will also build on the state’s investments in the Regional Farm to Food Bank program and Double Up Food Bucks by expanding their reach and making them permanent, so local farmers and food-insecure families are better supported.
