CWA NM Legislative Council Endorses Haaland for Governor
This Endorsement Includes: Locals 7076, 7011, 7070
Albuquerque, NM – Today, CWA NM Legislative Council, including Locals 7076, 7011, and 7070, announced their endorsement for Deb Haaland to be the next governor of New Mexico.
CWA represents public employees across the state with members working for the State of New Mexico, University of New Mexico, University of New Mexico Hospital, Central New Mexico Community College, Timberon Water and Sanitation Department, and Albuquerque Community Safety Department.
“Deb Haaland has a proven record of fighting for working families and will be a fierce advocate for our members in office,” said Alvaro Rivera, CWA local 7070 Vice President.
“Public employees working for the people of our state deserve to be supported with fair wages, safe working conditions, and the benefits they have earned. Donald Trump has attacked our communities and continues to put his wealthy friends ahead of working people. As governor, I will be the first line of defense in standing up for our unions and workers across the state. I am honored to earn the endorsement of the CWA New Mexico Legislative Council, and CWA councils across the state,” said Haaland.
CWA NM Legislative Council joins workers across New Mexico who support Haaland: Western States Regional Council of Carpenters, SMART Local 49, NEA – NM, Council 18 AFSCME, American Federation of Teachers-New Mexico, and the Committee of Interns and Residents of the Service Employees International Union.
Haaland has stood in solidarity with unions her entire career and understands that strong unions help families pay the bills, have access to healthcare, and earn a secure retirement. In Congress, Haaland voted to raise the minimum wage and cosponsored legislation to strengthen workers’ rights to organize. Under Haaland’s leadership the Department of the Interior was voted one of the best agencies to work by the public servants who work there, and she oversaw hundreds of millions of dollars of investments across the country that created good-paying union jobs.
Haaland released an education plan that works to expand career pathways starting in middle school. Haaland hopes to cultivate the next generation of skilled trades-workers by having schools partner with experienced, quality, union apprenticeship programs to provide more opportunities for our kids and meet our workforce needs. Haaland’s affordability agenda lays out a plan to build New Mexico’s workforce, support our workers, and fight wage theft.
Throughout her campaign, Haaland has traveled to all 33 counties in New Mexico, meeting directly with parents, students, educators, and families to hear their concerns and share her vision for New Mexico. Supporting New Mexico’s workers and creating a pipeline of workers is a top priority for Haaland.
