Haaland Receives Gun Sense Candidate Distinction

Haaland has Plan to Prevent Gun Violence

Albuquerque, N.M. – Today, Deb Haaland, who is running to be the next governor of New Mexico, announced that she has received a 2026 Moms Demand Action Gun Sense Candidate distinction.

Moms Demand Action is a grassroots movement committed to fighting for smart public safety measures that can protect people from gun violence.

“Every New Mexican deserves to feel safe sending their child to school, going to the grocery store, or gathering in their neighborhood. But right now, that’s not a reality for far too many families,” said Haaland. “I am committed to passing sensible measures that protect lives, get illegal guns off our streets, and help prevent the next gun tragedy before more communities are torn apart.”

Haaland’s public safety plan works to promote gun safety by:

  • Passing the Stop Illegal Gun Trade Act to put new requirements on firearms dealers, restrict extremely dangerous weapons, and provide oversight on restricted weapons.
  • Appoint a dedicated Gun Violence Prevention Coordinator, who will oversee a taskforce dedicated to stemming the plague of gun violence.
  • Establish an Office of Gun Violence Prevention to work with the Department of Public Safety to address gun violence across the state and develop prevention frameworks.
  • Recruit mentors to address gun violence, develop strategies to remove illegal guns from schools, and mobilize community support.
  • Monitor reports of juveniles’ social media posts that show illegal guns and conduct outreach to their households to prevent them from committing gun crimes.
  • Address generational gun culture by reaching out to young people who have family members convicted of gun-related crimes.

On the campaign trail, Haaland has visited all 33 counties to hear from New Mexicans directly and share her vision for the state.
