Deb’s Plan Works for New Mexicans.

Education, Affordability, Public Safety, Healthcare

Albuquerque, N.M. – Heading into Saturday’s debate, Deb Haaland, who is running to be the next governor of New Mexico, is in the strongest position to win the primary election. Since launching her campaign, Haaland released her four pillar plan to build a brighter future for New Mexicans.

After traveling to all 33 counties in the state and meeting with educators, law enforcement, doctors, parents, and working class families, Haaland built her policy plans hand in hand with New Mexicans. Her plans invest in education, make life more affordable, create a safer New Mexico, and provide access to quality healthcare.

Read the highlights below:

Haaland’s education plan includes policies that will build strong readers, support educators, and help families support the learners in their households.

  • Support early reading and steady math instruction through targeted instruction so kids don’t fall behind.
  • Develop workforce pathways by bringing the trades into middle and high school.
  • Grow and improve universal childcare.
  • Expand the Opportunity Scholarship to give New Mexicans the chance to get a degree.

Her affordability plan lowers everyday costs for families, increases pay for workers, and makes bold investments in New Mexicans ready to build businesses, creates good-paying jobs, and expands the industries that power our state’s future.

  • Raise the minimum wage and put more money in New Mexican’s pockets by expanding child and working families tax credits.
  • Lower rent by banning rent fixing and building more housing.
  • Lower the costs of utilities by doubling down on renewable energy.
  • Support small businesses by creating a one stop shop for resources.

In her public safety plan, Haaland believes that we need to prevent crime, not just stop it. Her plan provides solutions to keep violent criminals and illegal drugs off our streets and ensures law enforcement has the tools they need to stop crime, while addressing its root causes through investments in mental health, substance abuse and rehabilitation programs.

  • Provide law enforcement with the tools and technology to arrest violent offenders, track and detain drug traffickers, and get guns out of the hands of those who should not have them.
  • Create an Office of Community Safety to coordinate social workers and counselors who can respond to behavioral health crises.
  • Help kids stay on the right path with afterschool and mentorship programs.
  • Address sexual assault, domestic violence, and crimes against children.

Her healthcare plan defends Medicaid from Trump’s cuts, fixes the doctors and nurses shortage, lowers costs, takes healthcare back from corporations and makes sure every New Mexican can get the care they need.

  • Ensure every New Mexican has healthcare by creating a low cost public health option.
  • Increase mobile health clinics to reach New Mexicans in rural areas and protect rural hospitals.
  • Protect Medicaid from Trump’s cruel cuts.
  • Fix the healthcare worker shortage by increasing resident training slots, enhancing student loan repayment programs, and expanding medical compacts.
  • Support the long term health of New Mexicans by having access to clean air and water and healthy food.
