Haaland Tours Affordable Housing Site, Highlights Plan to Address New Mexico’s Housing Shortage

Albuquerque, NM – Today, Deb Haaland, the Democratic candidate for governor of New Mexico, toured Sombra del Oeste, a Homewise housing community currently under construction in southwest Albuquerque. Homewise, a local nonprofit, has helped thousands of New Mexicans achieve homeownership.

“New Mexicans deserve a safe place to live and the opportunity to buy a home at an affordable price. Homewise is helping make affordable housing a reality for working families across the state,” said Haaland at the event. “As governor, I will prioritize lowering costs by building more affordable housing and expanding access to homeownership programs, like Homewise, for working families.”

Haaland’s plan to address the housing shortage for New Mexico includes:

  • Stopping Wall Street from buying up New Mexico’s housing.
  • Addressing worker and housing shortages in rural communities by using state-owned assets to expand housing for state employees and provide housing to workers filling job shortages.
  • Building more housing more efficiently by requiring applications for housing projects be approved within a certain time period and cutting the red tape.
  • Lowering the cost of building by making properties “site ready” and reducing the GRT on construction materials to build housing.

In Congress, Haaland stood up for the rights of military families to have safe housing and tenant rights. Haaland’s affordability agenda works to make it easier to build more housing, and revamps permitting and zoning that make it harder to keep New Mexicans housed.
